This unit is about the myth of the melting pot. A melting pot would mean everything is united as one. It is considered a myth about America because not everyone believes it. I believe it is a myth. I do not think America has ever been a melting pot. Racism has been around for years, even now it still exists. People will always judge other people and sometimes it is because of their race. It is a sad fact and one of man’s faults. People make assumptions when they do not understand something. Because of assumptions, there are stereotypes now. People have been judged based on their race alone. According to Harris and Carbado, an African American was assumed to be stealing just because he had a black bag. He may have found the food floating in the water. No one really knows except for him but people assume things because of his race. It is not fair or just but that is how the world is now. People assume things before getting all the facts. The world is very complex.
The world is not just solid black and white colors. Everyone is different in their own way. America is filled with people from different cultures. People have to learn to accept one another. A person from another culture should not forget where they come from. It is a part of their life. Syncnetism is when come together as one. Unity can be a good thing but one can risk losing their identity. It is important for people to remember who they are. Everyone is capable of change. America may not be a melting pot now but if people can learn to overcome their differences and not judge others solely on their race then maybe it is possible.
